NASA’s Great Observatories

November 4, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us for our 5th program in the NASA Eclipse 2024 with NASA Ambassador Jim Porter to discover what scientists are learning from the NASA Great Observatories; the largest, most powerful space telescopes ever developed!

For the past 30 years NASA has been discovering the distant mysteries of the universe using four great orbiting observatories. Headlined by the Hubble Space Telescope, these four scientific instruments include the Chandra X-ray Telescope (built right here in Rochester), the Compton Gamma-ray Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope for Infra-red imaging, now replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope.

This constellation is engineered to sample a large portion of the electro-magnetic spectrum and allow us to detect objects that cannot be seen from the surface of the earth.

Jim Porter worked as an aerospace engineer in several states, including Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, CA. His popular presentations are engaging and easy to listen to for all levels.
