June 10th, 2021 Partial Solar Eclipse

Excitement was in the air early this morning as the Greater Rochester Region experienced a deep partial solar eclipse as the sun rose.

The Rochester Museum & Science Center hosted two official viewing locations:

  1. Hamlin Beach State Park right on Lake Ontario
  2. Martin Road Park in a wide-open field in Rush, NY

Hundreds of attendees started to file in about a half-hour before the sun rose. Solar viewing glasses were available in the days leading up to the eclipse and on-site.

At exactly 5:31 AM, the sun peeked over the horizon and at 5:38 AM the sun was 78% percent covered by the moon.

Between both official locations, over 500 folks were able to join in the celebration.

We would like to thank the staff at the Hamlin Beach State Park and the Henrietta Parks and Recreation Department for hosting us, along with the Astronomy Section Rochester Academy of Science for bringing telescopes and other solar viewing equipment.
